Still Buzzing: Highlights from Our Volunteer Development Workshop
It’s been over a week since our Volunteer Development Workshop, and we’re still buzzing from the energy, insights, and inspiration that filled the room!
We welcomed attendees from across South East Queensland who were eager to dive into the many volunteer and official roles that keep the sport of weightlifting running strong. Through hands-on experiences and in-depth discussions, participants gained a deeper understanding of how they can contribute meaningfully to the sport they love.
Refereeing, Marshalling & More
The day kicked off with QWA President, Jemma Cowper unpacking the often unseen challenges of refereeing. From technical calls to managing pressure, attendees gained valuable insight into the nuance and responsibility behind the whistle. Jem also broke down the referee systems, making even the abstract feel approachable.
The highly experienced Alex Croot, took the group through a practical masterclass in marshalling, demystifying the marshalling table and helping both coaches and officials better understand the flow of competition.
Behind the scenes, QWA Operations Manager Deb Keelan turned what can be one of the most intimidating roles—computer operations and timekeeping—into something accessible and manageable for all.
Building a Stronger Volunteer Pathway
QWA President Fraser Harrison shared an inspiring overview of the Olympic Volunteering (Oly Voly) pathways and introduced the “White Lights of Wellbeing” model. This wellbeing framework helps volunteers reflect on what’s personally meaningful and how they can grow in their roles—creating a sense of purpose and place within our weightlifting community.
